Contestants are asked to write a novella using 1 or more of the following fundamental themes of the Mary Shelley novel Frankenstein:

  • The Other: disability, differences, and disenfranchisement
  • Humanity’s response to technology: creatively expanding horizons and possibilities; using technology to solve human problems.
  • Creativity and the responsibility for what has been created.
  • Vengeance and futility
  • Community: what it means to be human; what is the measure of humanity?

Submission Guidelines

  • This contest is open to any person currently living in Southeastern Minnesota/SELCO Library region.
  • One novella entry per author
  • Entries must be a work of fiction, with a minimum length of 20,000 words and a maximum length of 50,000 words.
  • Submissions must be double-spaced and typed in Times New Roman, in font size 12.
  • Entries must include a synopsis of 150 words or less of the novella.
  • Entries must be entirely your own work.
  • Entries already published, accepted, or submitted elsewhere are ineligible.
